Cat 22 pilot bearing was created by GrantJ
My rather long saga of converting my 22 over to electric start has had many roadblocks. Mostly weather related but today my new pilot bearing arrived. NAPA AUTO Hyatt Pilot Bearing SPL  OR304. Florin Tractor found a throwout bearing for me but could not locate a pilot bearing. An old timer at Napa dug thru books and found this. It is a good number to put in your manual.  I hope it helps someone.  Grant.

Hi Grant, I picked up one of those as well as the SR-304 which is the roller part of the bearing (or the race - can't remember which : )

Cheers,

Hi All
Just fitted electric start to a 22 and had to change the pilot bearing and throw out bearing, the pilot bearing is the same as D2 bearing 1b3739 and the race is a 1b3740 and are still avaliable from Cat as for 4b3712 race it is no longer available.

Hope this helps.

Regards

What I bought from Napa (SPL OR304) included the outer race and the roller part. It was $78 including shipping. Florin could not find it for me, so I assumed that Cat did not have them. Grant.

That's great to know, thanks Grant! I bought new old stock from someone like Florin or maybe it was on ebay. I didn't consider Napa as a source. That's a keen price too - well done!

Rax200, any chance of a photo of your ring gear installation? The shop I had install the ring gear did not turn the flywheel down any farther than needed to put it on. There is no space behind it to allow for the nose cone of the starter. I will post a photo of how NOT TO DO IT when I remove the flywheel to have it redone. Grant.

I received the dimensions. Thank You Rax200, I have a different situation since I could not locate any original parts, I went with the Ford starter motor and a ring gear from a Ford. I dont recall the exact number of teeth but it is around 170. The Ford starter has a nose cone that extends a little further into the flywheel than the starter gear. That means that the flywheel has to be turned down far enough into the surface to allow room on both sides of the ring gear to allow for the nose cone. I am going to pull the flywheel again and take it back to the machine shop with better instructions from me. I will post photos when I do it. I also have a slightly different flywheel since I have one of the first 800 or so 22s that used the Cat 15 flywheel. That does not make any difference in doing the electric start conversion but it will show a difference in the weight. "The saga continues" Thanks, Grant.
