Hi Jason,
Welcome to the forum.
I moved your post from the models section to the Discussion section where you are more likely to get a reply.
If you look at the interactive map on the Chapters page you may find that there is a club member nearby who can offer practical advice.
I have tow started my D2 many times. You will need to chain up the blade and will need quite a high horsepower tractor to pull the D4, over 100Hp I would think. I usually tow mine in top (5th) gear with decompression on and the throttle (rack) shut right off for a bit until it builds up oil pressure then move to compression and open the throttle. It usually starts straight away then.

Hi Jason,
The left lever is the hand clutch. If you shove it all the way forward you should be able to shift gears. It may be engaged or stuck engaged. It may take quite a bit of force to snap it into disengagement. There is an interlock system that locks it in gear. It is accessable through the plate beneath the air cleaner.
Good luck

Welcome to the forum! We like to see new Caterpillar owners and there's a good group of members that will chip in and be as helpful as possible. I would recommend joing the cub, as a member you can access a large library of Caterpillar manuals including for your D4 7u. Price of admission is cheap for what you get.
Good luck with you project!

Welcome, lot of experience and knowledge here everyone is generally willing to share with new operators.
Read the operators manual over and over then come with the specific questions on thing your not sure of. Having grown up with the old machines it is hard to remember to talk of some of the most basic stuff. So to me it is easier to answer questions than just trying to not forget some of the basic things.
You mentioned you tube, and there is a lot of stuff out there some not near as good as others. Squatch253 is member here and most here think he does a good job of explaining things as well as showing what to do on his you tube channel.

Pacific Northwest Hillbilly is doing a great job with his channel and the D4 he's brought back to life. I remember watching the first video when he bought that machine and thinking he was out of his mind. I have been proven wrong very soundly, he now has a machine we'd all be proud to own.

get yourself copies of the OMI,servicemans reference and parts book for your machine. the parts book is very handy as amny parts are still available from the dealer netork but they need part numbers. as they dont have listings for all the older models.

Welcome jaymaynard! I second or third the notion of getting a set of quality operator, service and parts books. Look around, they are there. Also don't be afraid to ask questions here on the bulletin board or anywhere else. A friend of mine told me when I started on my D4 that everything was pretty simple, but most things are HEAVY. He was right. sometimes a little before knowledge saves a lot of useless taking apart and putting back together.
There are many knowledgeable folks here who are not afraid of giving advice or opinions. You will soon figure that out on your own.
Good luck on the tractor and again welcome to the Bulletin board and if you are not already, please become a member of ACMOC.
