Haha many great responses....I did get to dive in a little last night and there is more play in the flywheel then i originally thought, this is leading me to believe its not seized. My plan is to pull the magneto tonight, when i was rotating it back and forth with the minimal play it sounds like something is hitting in there. The biggest thing im having right now is getting everything cleaned so I don't pull and let dirt in. I've been blowing everything off however im thinking to pull it out of the shop this weekend even if its freezing and giver her a good bath. I think I can pull it out fairly easy I'm just not sure if my tractor will have the guts to push it back in....but im going to give it a try. Second question it occurred to me last night i was reading up on the electric start conversion that for a long time dad and grandpa were using 12v to start the pony. Could this have damaged the magneto and the starter?

You can't hurt the magneto just by jumping it with 12vdc. The mag is self contained and not part of the electrical system. That would only matter if pony had battery ignition.
I would start by removing the starter motor on the pony. You can even check it by hooking it up on your workbench and see if it works. No worries getting anything into pony motor either. Try turning pony once you've removed the starter motor. Then proceed to look further.

I'd agree sideseat, except in the case of my buddy's Traxcavator. Someone had wired up the battery supply through a non-OEM switch in place of the magneto grounding switch and when we attached the battery and "turned on" the "mag switch", it cooked the magneto points. Luckily it didn't fry the coil so it was an easy fix. Nonetheless, it did remind me to check stuff that doesn't look right before proceeding : ) We've rewired it so that turning the switch "off" grounds the mag, but I really would like to get an OEM switch which only has one terminal which hopefully would prevent some enterprising fellow from giving it battery supply in the future
Cheers,

Okay so i had a chance to dive in last night i pulled the starter it functions well no difference to the flywheel. Next i pulled the magneto and the gears were in excellent shape and the magneto itself looked good. Still no difference to the flywheel i did notice that inside the cavity it did appear to be some mild oxidation but the gears all looked clean and new. I will try to get pictures this evening. Next i opened the adjustment plate on top of the clutch and it looks in poor shape there is visible rust on some of the parts and moving the handle back and forth is surprisingly difficult. I will get a picture of that as well tonight. What im thinking now after looking at the manual is to prep the pony for removal and remove the clutch and diagnose that. If that's not the issue im assuming im at the point of pulling the pony for a rebuild. Im hoping it just needs a clutch rebuild or adjustment. Thanks everyone

Most likely the clutch and pinion shaft bearings are tied up, lack of checking and changing the oil and rusted bearings over years probable cause.

Bennett, I have a D6 9U with direct start, added , no pony no glow plugs. flip the starter switck, tiny shot of eather in intake, she fires right off every time, been that way for the 6 years I have owned her, does the ground work yearly on out 300 acres of silage. Pretty easy to add the starter and a pair of batteries in series, starter on mine is 24 volt. Have fun!
