Hi bruceoz and other Twenty Two experts. Other than the graphite-impregnated gland packing, are there any other parts in the water pump that would be replaced during a rebuild? My cousin's unit leaks and while I have tweaked up the gland some, I'd prefer to pull it off and inspect it and replace parts that are in less than good condition, so recommendations for bushings, wear surfaces, etc. that would be best replaced while I have the "hood open" would be much appreciated. And is there a recommended lubricant other than generic grease?
Cheers,
Neil

Hello , as you can see from part book , there is only a bushing and sharft and the packing in the pump , some have turned up new sharft and bushing when they became to to pitted to stop water bypass when new packing is fittedĀ

use marine grease its better washout resistant. and never use graphite type packing with stainless shafts it attacks the stainless. fine on steel though.

I have replaced many brass shafts out of bulldozer water pumps with stainless and never had a problem. They use graphite impregnated rope packing.
The sugar mill where I worked used graphite impregnated rope packing on several centrifigal pumps all of which had stainless shafts.

If I had the option on packing, what would an alternative to graphite impregnated be? Just regular hemp soaked in plumber's green grease? That's what I used when plumbing although the components were all brass in that scenario

The last water pump packing that I got from Ca for our D7 3t was a white teflon type square packing

i was told that by a marine engineer maybe its when combined with salt water it attacks/wears it. you can get plain white packing that isnt graphite treated. yet dad assembled many borehole pumps with graphite grease on the connecting collars and guide buckets. yet i trust the opinion of the bloke who told me and he should know over 30yrs at sea all over the pacific ocean

The 1A8736 packing was available from Cat a few years ago. Same as used on the J series D2 and a few other machines.
