Hi,
just starting out looking to buy my first D2 tractor, was wondering how important brake pedal wear is and should I avoid a tractor with little too no tread left on the pedal?
I have found a D2 3J 3646 SP  tractor it's self looking in good condition and still trying to work out the value, also understand that value is in the under carriage
could anyone give me a bit of advice as I'm relatively new to vintage plant buying, greatly appreciated, thanks

Welcome! to give you solid advice we'd need more info. First, there is an hour meter on the lower portion of the injection pump covered by a round metal flap, take a look at it, not all of them are readable. More photos of the tracks, sprockets and Idlers would help. Does it run? Does the starting engine run? Can you pull one steering clutch back without the other moving? How much end-play ion the starting engine? And more. Worn pedals are only one indication of condition, and while it means it has been put to work, it does not really indicate condition.

Just as the brake petal indicated a lot of use, the draw bar looks good in the pictures. Not that much time dragging tillage tools? They where built in the day of making it to be repaired, so the question was it. Used and reconditioned could well be better than halve or three quarters used up and left sitting. So not much help from afar. Just that the tin and paint look good from this side of the camera.

If you are not intending to use it for long hard hours on a farm, I would think that a worn (but not worn out) undercarriage) would not be a deal breaker. Most of these old Cats are used for Hobby purposes. Hobby farms rarely put a lot of hours on Cats so unless you are looking for a perfect showroom example or going to use it commercially, a worn undercarriage would probably outlast you and your next generation. The photos of that D2 make it look like it is probably an older restoration. Looks pretty good. I worry more about clutches and brakes because they require some pretty major work to change out. Are you located on the Isle of Sky? Grant.

Hi Scotlandoban,
Welcome to the ACMOC Forum.
I'm sure you will find here not only all the information you will need to understand and restore your new D2, but also welcoming and helpful fellow enthusiasts.
Assuming that you are located in Oban, there are no members in that region of the UK, but several in Scotland - take a look at the map on the CHAPTERS page of the website.

I recommend (well I would wouldn't I) that you join our club then you will have advert free access to the website as well as full access to the members library, where you will find many valuable documents. There are over 200 with D2 in the title including parts manuals, serviceman's reference manuals, operation and maintenance instructions and links to the outstanding videos by Squatch 253 which covers everything you need to know (and a lot more !) on restoring a D2 tractor.

ACMOC membership costs just $44 or $70 if you would like a paper copy of the magazine mailed out to you. The magazine is also posted in the members area of the website so you can read it if you take out the $44 "electronic" membership.

In the library are many back issues of the magazine, including the copy I just added (see separate thread on latest library additions) detailing steering clutches.

Oban just rang a bell with me. The wife and I were in the area in 2019, on a folk music tour. I think we came thru Oban. With three weeks in Scotland, on bus tours, train rides and just walking, I never saw an old Caterpillar. I saw modern excavators and other Cat equipment but no crawlers. Local club members may know of a show piece but I suspect that you may have to buy the best you can find and then make everything just right. We will be in Scotland again this coming June but there is not enough spare time on a music tour to explore for Cats.
