D6 9u Steering Booster Seals ( 1 Year Late)

today i was playing around in the shop and did the photo shoot on the steering booster seals. so here it is
#1 grind the bump off, close to the end, there might be 2 of them
#2 centre punch and drill with a drill size that you can tap 1/4 threads in for a bolt.
#3 drill very easy until you get flakes of alumunim (you must STOP)
#4 remove 3/4 wrench head bolts (at the end of the booster where the steering rods enter) and watch the inside rods shoot across the shop because you did hold them with your other hand and a punch in the hold. (note springs in the background of pictures, good for 20 feet easy, LOL)
#5 take your remover thingy that you made out of 3/4 threaded rod and a ground down fine thread thick nut that is welded to the end (kind used on truck spring and old magnet will tell the size)
#6 thread it on to the alumumin seal thing inside and then start tightening the 3/4 nut to pull the seal thing out. it pops out at the end of the deep socket on the impact wrench.
#7 be very careful is unscrewing the alumumin seal thing from the puller rod because you don't want to nick it up. change the seals and make a special note on the conditions of the rods that slide in and out of the seal. they maybe pitted and causing the seals to leak.
#8 tap out the hole you drilled in the body for a 1/4 bolt that will hold the seal thing in place.
reassemble and hope for the best, if it still leaks, duct tape the crap out of it and put a j-cloth under the lever rods.

here's some of the same operation dun down south last fall. just shows sum other angles of same and the underbelley of the hydraulic booster unit. That would be the pump hangin' on that drives the booster. When repaired successfully, you can pull them clutch levers with your pinky. And please.... scold me if eye am interferin'

Same procedure that King uses just in warmer climate!

Dirt Dog and everbody else with a post 13,623 serial #'d D6-9U or one with hydraulic assist steering booster this is good stuff. You'll be glad you dun'er if ya' get em' steering easy. Been the best repair I dun yet.

Another thought is to seal that pump on the bottom of the booster and check for wear parts and seals there also. Additionally, if ya really want it tight replace the seals in the lever arms that activate the clutch. She can leak there too and it'll all be in the open when its off.

KoO, I compliment you on your procedure and description.
Yellercat, with those extra pics the subject is well covered.
Aaahh, if there was only an archive section to capture it all.

dirt dog, save what you can here because it is a pain in the ass project, you will need beverage to take the pain away.

also on the gear thing that yellercat post, there is a little snap ring inside and things come loose when the snap ring wears out. check it for slop because it will come loose and fall in the crown gear then you have BIG TIME problems, LOL

KOO and others: Yes, we do need an archives section. We will be working on that this year (2007). Still need to work out some "kinks" in this board. GWH
