Stuck D2 5U Steering clutches

More

Purchased a D2 5U #8891 last summer with stuck steering clutches, tried all tricks that everyone suggested to get them unstuck and just got caught up enough to get in shop and have one side tore down and have clutch pack on the bench to release springs and pry apart the discs.  My question is if my discs are not usable where can I get replacements or parts, are they even available?

Get your replacement disks from General Gear. I picked up disks (both sorts), both hubs, new brake bands, and a couple of other items from GG - all fit correctly and work as expected

General Gear is a few miles east of Boise, just off I 84. Can't remember the exit but you can see it from the freeway. John is a good guy to deal with.

I stopped by General Gear a number of years ago when I was out west and purchased some parts. It is worth a look if you have the time and your close. I also found them to be good folks.

Sometimes the discs are so full of rust they will compress the springs so tightly you can not remove the keepers! That may require replacement of the entire assembly.
While you have it torn down and the clutches apart -- make sure you look at the "splines" inside the drum - they can become so worn it is difficult to to remove the drum and also affects the clutch operation.

Years ago, a "fix" for steering clutches that were worn - add another disk to make up the thickness - it often got one by for a period of time -
This was not an uncommon practice, especially as Cat orphaned many of the older machines, no longer were parts available.

Best of Luck.

Yes, I had to cut my inner hub off the shaft as the 20t ram wouldn't move it. All the plates, keepers, springs, etc. were all trash. It's all brand new now, both sides, and works like power steering
