D4 build date?

D4 build date? was created by rws53
I 've tried a couple of Caterpillar dealers with no success....they say the serial number is too short for their lookup database.

The serial number on the engine and frame tags is 7U18818.

My dad bought it new in the early 50's.  I'd like to know the date as I am planning on listing it for sale.

Thanks in advance.

Yes 7U were more popular as wide (60") gauge finishing at serial number 7U44307 vs 6U in standard gauge (44") finishing in serial number 6U12781. Purchase you copy of the Club'' serial number book and you can see all the production volumes by serial by year.

I haven't listed it for sale anywhere yet but will in the near future including on this site.  I don't know if the board administrators would allow me to post pictures of the machine in the discussion forum just to show the machine off pre-sale?

One may decode the casting letters on the engine block, trans case, and elsewhere using the NUMERALCOD cipher.
N 0, U 1, M 2, E 3, R 4, A 5, L 6, C 7, O 8, D 9

Example…

UN ME AM would de-cipher as 10/23/52 or October 23, 1952

I have not listed the machine for sale anywhere yet so do not make any offers at this time. When the time comes, I will post it for sale in the classified section. Here are pictures to show an older machine that my dad bought new in the early 50's and I inherited when he passed away 25 years ago. It was used for light ditching work and digging rocks (with the small rock blade attachment) on our farm fields.
