I was finally able to get a good spark on my mag after some more cleaning and adjustments, but I didnt pay attention to the spark plug wire order when I took them off. I think the side of the mag closest to the main block goes to the number one cylinder which should be the cylinder closest to the front of the tractor. Is that correct? I have a magneto service handbook and also an original D8 operators handbook but they dont give that information . Thanks in advance for any responses.

Sorry thought it was about a D4, there you need to cross wires right/left

yes that would be logical. the d4 pilot engine is reversed possibly due to direction of rotation. i got cuaght with ours when we changed the leads.

Actually there are dipper cups shown at the bottom of each crank rods, does anyone have them on their D2/D4 pony motor?

None that I am aware of on the small opposed cylinder ponies.
They are shown on the D17000 pony motors which apparently that illustration portrays.
