D4C 40A Brake/Clutch/Steering Adjustments

Looking for a little clarification on my 40A restoration project. I just finished completely rebuilding my main clutch, steering clutches, new brake bands, every inch of linkage freed up and new pins, shims and threads cleaned and all painted.Im in the adjusting phase, and most literature I have I understand. But when the service manual refers to “free play” or “free travel” in reference to the brake pedals, steering clutch levers, so on and so forth, is it referring to the distance they move back and forth without actually engaging them? Or is it referring to the movement the pedal/lever has one you start to say, apply the brakes or start to pull the lever on the steering clutch until it stops moving? The book isnt too clear and Ive heard both theories are correct. Any clarification would be great, or any tips on brake band/brake pedal, steering clutch, or main clutch adjustment would be awesome. Thank you, Mike.

"Free Play" is as it sounds... The amount of travel before anything happens, before clutch, brake , lever, etc. actually engages.

See that’s what I thought, but it just sounded weird to me because of what some of the specs were. Like for example they say that the brake pedal free travel should be 3 to 4 inches. That just seems like an awful lot of pedal movement before anything happens. But I suppose if that’s how it is and that’s how it’s supposed to be.
