D2 5U pinion lever questions

In need of any wisdom I can get, I just got my first dozer, it's a 1950 D2 5u. I got it home and fired her up, diesel engine perrs like a kitten however the pony motor would only run on choke and it didn't run well. Also noticed the clutch break snap over center needs adjusting as well as the pinion lever, the pinion lever doesn't want to stay in gaged so I'm having to keep constant upward pressure when turning over the big motor. I've found fourms that explan how to adjust the clutch break "snap over center" however I can't for the life of me find a fourm explaining how to adjust the latches for the pinion lever. Any help on that would be much appreciated.  The main issue I'm dealing with is the pony motor, I've taken the carb off, cleaned it really well and installed a rebuild kit with new gaskets and a new float valve and seet. Now I can't get this thing to pop off, something worth noting is I pulled the mag cover to give it a once over and installed new plug wires and plugs. My concern is that while I was waiting for the plug wires to come in the mail my kids played on the dozer moving levers and possibly the rotor on the mag. Iv also noticed that the kids pulled back the pinion lever and ingaged it.  I'm using a make shift electric motor to turn over the pony motor. Simple bracket with hinges and a one hp motor with belt to turn it over.   I have sparkI have fuel And it will pop and back fire through the carb but won't take off. no mater what adjustments I make on the carb there is little to no change. It won't even run on either. It has to be timing right? Or maybe because the pinion is in gaged with the ring gear? Any help would be so appreciated.

Try changing the plug wires see if it is 189 out of time.  Easy and cheap. Out nothing if it doesn't fix it.

on my d4 which has a very similar setup to the d2 i had same problem changed the pl;ug leads and it wouldnt fire.

they must be proper copper wire core and metal ends to work. also i found it wasnt like you would think left plug lead to left cyl. no it was crossed over left went to right and right to left.
so yes change them over and see if it fires.

Having the pinion engaged makes it harder to start unless your pinion clutch is very free, and most aren't. So open up that little round cover, turn the pony crank until you can see a latch adjusting screw, press on the end with a punch or screwdriver or rod, and release the latches. Then for timing, the best option is to review the serviceman's reference in the library, but basically you're looking for a) top dead center on #1 which is the cylinder on the driver's / left side of the tractor where the pinion controls are, and then back clockwise about 15-20 degrees is when the mag points should open. The distributor rotor should be lined up with the carbon brush on the left side whose plug wire leads to the plug on the left side. If it doesn't, then the timing needs to be adjusted. I just adjusted a Wico mag on a D4 today and had to set the distributor rotor so that it was pointing to the correct spark plug lead brush.
