D5 98J steering was created by Mschwartz
Made a deal for the D5 I posted about last week.  Engine was hydro locked. Was able to crank engine over slowly with the bolt
on the front of crank and release water out past the exhaust valves. Started and missed for about a minute and then cleaned up and sounds good. Moved it a mile or so to a friends house and I think the reason it was parked is that the right side steering clutch will not release. Left seems fine and both brakes appear good. Prior owner thought maybe a bearing was bad?  Would that be a cross shaft bearing?  Any way to diagnose with out complete tear down?  Thanks, Mike

If you suspect cross shaft bearings, take the back cover off and get in there with a pry bar and see if you have any lateral movement.

Most likely the throw out bearing in the steering clutch, if it is bearing related. I cannot say if the cross shaft could move far enough to keep the steering clutch from releasing, but would not think so.

Since it sat out and got water in engine to hydro lock very likely it got enough water in clutch to rust plates together. Or is it already a steering clutch that runs in oil. But even so how high is the oil in compartment and how long did it sit. I have seen tractors sit for years out in the rain and steer clutches work fine others sit for a few months and rust up.

Dry steering clutches, do not suspect water in the steering clutch compartment. Comes from a 7-9 inch rainfall area that has been in a prolonged drought. Probably only 1/2 of that last few years. Will pull some covers off when I get it home. I think that it failed while being used tractor sat for 6-8 years before I started it last Friday

Open up the right side inspection cover at the back of the machine and look for water or oil. Many D5 and D6 tractors that I have encountered have had very weak right side steering only due to the presence of such. Usually the right side weeps oil before the left side I have observed. I have a D5 SA 98J here that acts like the right side does not release, but rather the brakes are (were) soaked with excessive water/oil mixture, even with the drain plug not installed...fast forward, the boys from Greg's crew have been stretching her legs at Tulare and the Patrick Ranch, and everything works great now.***This tractor rarely ever got rained on btw***Two cans of brake cleaner and possibly some "Dutch" oven cleaner was tossed inside to dry things out. I moved it yesterday and it acts like it should for the first time in 4 years since I have had it. Good luck. JM

Being a dry clutch it is most likely rusted plates. The rainfall is maybe not the problem, but condensation inside the metal case. I got a 9u out of a barn in a area east of me that has about a 8 inch average. One steering clutch worked to walk it over a mile to the road and load it. Fixed that clutch worked it 10 to 20 hours other clutch stopped working. The fuel tank had been 3/4 full but with the L shape still had a lot of surface area with very heavy rust. Gave up and used a different tank.

I was shocked at how much rust there was from a very dry, low humidity area as well as inside a barn.

Other than yours has a cab the steering clutches are not that bad a job.
