I know, another “what’s it worth” post. But an older gentleman who likes to sell me old tractors and stuff came into possession of a Caterpillar Thirty Five gas. I haven’t seen it myself, but he said the frame and undercarriage has been sandblasted and painted. Motor and radiator are both out but have been rebuilt. Has a cable control unit on the rear and comes with some kind of cable dozer set up. He’s telling me he’s into it for $2500 and would like $3000. Is it worth it? Hopefully I’ll get to see it tomorrow.

You'll know once you see if it runs and what the undercarriage is like. If it runs and has good tracks, then I'd say definitely worth it, because you wouldn't have to do anything to make use of it

That description sounds identical to a machine that was in an auction a couple weeks ago in South Dakota. The pictures that I saw support what you are saying. I think its a fair price so long as all the parts are there to reassemble .

Apologies, I failed to see the fact that it's still disassembled so running is not an option. I would offer him his 2500 since that's all it's cost him. If he meant to also account for his labor, he should include that in the "he has 2500 into it" amount. The fact that it doesn't run means it's just a pile of parts, albeit some in good condition. If he sold it by parts, he'd get his money and then some but then he would be left with some parts that won't sell.
Cheers,

there is only one honest answer about what anything is worth.
what the buyer is willing to pay and the seller is willing to receive.
