New to the forum and dozers…

I recently inherited a 1985 D5b dozer from my dad. Serial number 44x with around 4,000 hrs on it
It has a power shift transmission. Was running well (as far as I know) 10 years ago when it was parked in a nice dry barn. He stopped running it because the left track tensioner was leaking and didn’t want to lose a track running it….

I am completely new to this equipment, but a pretty good mechanic and not afraid to get after any problems

So first off I split the track, rebuilt the tensioner, then rebuilt the two lift cylinders after they leaked all the oil out the first time I tried to lift the blade. Seals were completely rotted.

dozer runs great and is in good shape overall. But….

When I pull the right clutch lever the track starts slowing at about half way pulled and then continues to slow and then brake at full pull. Nice and smooth.
When I pull the left clutch I pull… and pull…and pull…. Nothing happens until I pull all the way then the track stops immediately, nothing smooth about it at all.

I know that dad had the right drive worked on when he first got the dozer 25 years ago, don’t know exactly what he had done, but pretty sure he never touched the left side.
I’ve ordered a service manual, don’t have it yet, but wanted to know where to start if someone has some advice
could the clutch be rusted or stuck together? How can I tell where to start
is there some control valve/adjustment that I can look at or some way to see if the clutch is disengaging?
I believe that this year is a dry clutch, but will know more when I get the manual

Any tips on getting me started would be appreciated

You can also buy a used operators manual, parts manual, and service manual on Ebay. They are a huge help.

Sounds like that brake could use adjustment per the service manual procedures. The clutches might not be releasing before the brake is activated. I think those are wet brakes if it's a 1985 model.
