be aware 6 volt windings are larger wire than 12 volt windings but they can be damaged by over voltage.
the best thing is get a 6 volt battery they are still readily available or may have to wait for them to get it in though.
and this goes for all electrical stuff CLEAN the terminals and USE quality wiring particularly on the grounds. bad grounds cause most auto electrical faults.

Couldn’t agree more with your statement on having a good ground. This older stuff is a little more forgiving than modern computer-controlled when it comes to that. Doesn’t take much to smoke a computer with a bad ground. Alternator is continually building a charge that gets larger and larger with nowhere to go until it finds its ground and then unloads all that energy in one fell swoop......****smoked!!***
