Ok guy's just wanted to Give an update on My D6 I found the Serial # It is (8U521 SP) can anyone tell me the Year? Also I replaced the brushes in the Magneto Cap cleaned the points Adjusted the points replaced the drain cocks polished the rotor and she fired off on the second try. also the main engine fired up on the third try with less than 1 second of spray of ether. Once again Thanks a milllion everyone. Oh can anyone coment on the condition of the tract chain ,rollers ect...

That would be an early first year production model in 1947. Sp stands for special.

avoid using ether its better to start with out it. a old mechanic told me avoid it since once you start needing to use it you always need to use it so put it off as much as you can.

yes in cold conditions ether can aid starting. but these old girls are designed to be warmed by the pilot engine that's why it exhausts through the main engine intake. this pipe is thin and often rusts out that's why its important to have a exhaust flap on the exhausts keep the water out you stop the rust and prevent dusting the engine. the coolant also circulates around the pilot. i was shown by the cousins to start our d4 they swore by running the pilot till the main engine intake was getting warm to the touch then turn the main over on decomp till it has oil and fuel pressure open the fuel fully and drop the decomp it should fire immediately.

Ya, that is what I heard. This old Gal had not run in about 10 years and it was my first time starting her. once she fired up she ran great. We shut her down for acouple times and she would start right up with no help from ether. Thanks everyone.

Book doesn't mention it is good way to burn your fingers. They can get hot very quickly. Been there. Cheers WF

I have done that too. when id had forgot to close the one tap. and watch the uninsulated plug ends they bite. dad found out the hard way, when we bought the d4 home from the workshop, he was starting it while it was still on the tilt tray. the driver was standing beside the truck he reckoned he saw the spark jump and say hello to dad's hand as it brushed past and it was a nice and healthy bright blue too.
