well after ten years it is time to get on the d7 4t. i gave the pup motor to cat d9 on the ACME BB so that means it is electric start time. i would like to run 12 volts and try and keep everything the same as the D6 9Us.

so what do i need???

Hi KoO,
Very similar drill as the D6
Starter choices are Delco Remy 40MT, 42MT or the slightly bigger and more powerful 50MT, all available in 12 and 24 volt. Clockwise rotation

Uses same helical drive as the D6

You will have to make up your own adapter to get from the three hole bellhousing flange to the starter drive end housing. Can be made from any SAE#3 starter nose and plate so long as it comes out two inches from the face of the flywheel to the face of the bellhousing flange and indexed/ground to clear the flywheel.

ok, for the others guys on the BB who are following along, can we recap the nose cone part with SAE #3.

also in your picture of the nosecone, it looks welded in to place????

The SAE #3 drawing was included just to show the two inch dimension for engagement. Ignore the rest for this application.

Yes, it is apparently welded. It is a hacked up standard drive end housing with mounting ears cut off and welded to an adapter plate. Looks crude but the picture is from a supplier of these conversions. Certainly would be better machined.

Also attached is another crappy picture of what looks to be a carved up standard drive end housing made to fit the application, also from the same conversion supplier.

thansk, here is a link to the ebay guy that has the best supply of parts but he doesn't have the 40 mt starter listed by itself, only parts.

i was thinking of phoning him and see what a complete start will cost ready to bolt on.

I am familiar with that source and have bought parts there. I'm sure he can get you a starter but it will not be a bolt on to the 3T. He can supply you with the helical drive and the starter motor but no one is supplying a drive end housing that will bolt directly to the 3T/4T without modification.

yes, if i get him to spec the starter for a d6 9u then i know i'll have everything interchangeable. i can make the plate for the bell housing using my magic wand, LOL.

trying to phone there but the line is busy, maybe i'm dailing 1-800-bambi instead, LOL

Up there in that "frigid" zone I'd be inclined to put the 50MT starter on there;)

good thinking if i had brand new high compression engines but my 60 year old collectables are low compression. so they start just fine, LOL
