A possibility- If you have a spare sparkplug connect it and carefully observe its spark with the pony cold and again quickly after the pony quits on its own (to rule in or out a a magneto problem).

a bad mag coil could be the issue. works fine initially then once it gets a bit warm it fails is a common sign of bad coil windings

Hi,
OK now have you checked that the 90 degree lever is actually 90 degrees as it is very hard to set the initial needle setting without bending it. The lever is very weak and so is hard to feel when the needle has seated before bending the lever.
The jet adjust screw must be easy to turn in its housing when off the carb. top.
When the lever is bent you do not get enough fuel flow (lean mixture) to run the pony without nearly full choke.

Scans below may help.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I checked it during assembly, but that’s not to say it’s not bent now. If the fuel flow and mag checks out,I guess the carb will have to come back Apart.will have to wait for the weekend before I will have a chance to work on it.keep you posted, thanks

Hi,
generally the Cat pony fuel shut off valves can be repacked with the likes of a strand from a multi string type water pump pump packing or I believe a mop string rubbed/massaged full of soap works well too.
To repack :- back off the packing gland nut that is on the valve body that has the on/off shaft going thru it, dig out the old packing and determine the length of new packing to go 1 turn, plus a smidgeon more for better crush, around the shaft--cut the packing ends at 45 Degrees so as to have a better sealing overlapping joint, fit the packing gland nut and tighten as needed.
Cheers,

Modern day marvels that were not available years ago make life simple.  Get some Teflon "string" from the local hardware or plumbing shop and use that.  It is impervious to most any chemical and makes a great seal.  Seems like the last I bought was $3 for about a 3 ft string.
