Cleaning D2 seat tank

Hello all, I have a D2 seat tank that I bought a few years ago. Very nice condition with no dents in the back. I painted it covered it, and let it sit for 2 years. The inside of the tank is now rusty. not solid rust, just surface rust. Can I clean it out without having to have it dipped and in the process, ruin the paint job? Thanks for any advice. :D Joe Giraud

Carl,
If you happen to need more citric acid, let me know and I will make arrangments for you to either pick it up in Anaheim, or possibly put it on a truck headed your way.

I don,t know how it would work in a fuel tank but the orange mix called "Tang" works very good for cleaning as I,ve used in it in a really scummy dish washer tub at our church that they claimed was terrible inside so I filled the soap container inside with the tang and ran it through a complete cycle for them (no dishes) and it was spotless when I opened it up.I read about it someplace quite awhile ago and I too ran it in mine when it was working yet and worked very well.

I repaired my D2 fuel tank this winter. I used a product called KBS coatings and was very pleased with the results. It uses a three step process where it cleans, removes rust and etches the metal, and the third step seals the tank.
The process will take a while to do and it takes two peole to rotate and flip the tank around to coat the inside but it is well worth the time. It cost around $59 for the kit. I found a local dealer and met him in a parking lot to buy it. Here is the web site.
