I can not get my cat 28 to start again after I shut it off. I have done a valve job. Magneto has been rebuilt. I checked the timming 10 times I think. Gone threw the carborator 2 time's. New gasket on the intake and exhaust manifold. All surface of the manifold have been machined flat. Was the 28 a hard starter or what? All my other ones I can turn off and on all daylong... The only other thing I can think of is maybe there is a crack in the intake on the inside?? I don't know need some advice or another place to look. Mike

Hi miked,
can you explain further.
The engine will not start since the valve grind etc was done?
The engine has run since the above work but now will not start?
If it was the 1st an old three card trick I have encountered is that a gasket is made and the center hole has been omited.
So is fuel reaching the cyls. other than what you may have put in through the primers?
Is the maggy timed to spark at the appropriate cyl. on compression stroke and near TDC?
Yes, my 2Ton inlet passage casting had a rust hole within the hot box which we found by lightly pressureising the manifold, it would fire and run on the priming fuel and at full choke only. I actually removed the manifold and adapted another carby to the inlet passage through the head and it ran perfectly. I realise it is a different set up to the 28, but just to show you can often find other ways around a problem to find the trouble source.
Look forward to hearing more obsevations on your dilemma so as to suggest further checks etc.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Try another mag. My 28 starts by giving it one crank with the choke on and one more turn with the choke open and it lights right off. I had a problem when I restored my 28 the original mag had nice spark or it appeared, but it wasn't good enough.

I figured it out. The spring on the points was weak. Witch would have made the spark all over the place. Changed the spring and start's right up 1/4 turn and run's great. Thanks for the help. Mike

Hi Mike,
good to hear you have sorted it out, thats a fairly tricky one to find, good work on the trouble shooting.
