I posted a few months back about this machine, The former owner left it sit for 3 years then went to start it and it would not start. He then called out a local mechanic to look at it, local mechanic pointed out there was no oil in it and it had a large hole in oil pan. Owner decided he did not want to deal with it and listed it for sale. After it was listed for a few months I went and looked at it, then went back again to take a second look, long story short it is now in my shop. This is the newest Cat I have owned and will be a learning experience. I believe it got water in the oil pan that froze and broke out pan as here is not a scratch in the inside of the oil pan. I do not understand how the water got in. So far I have removed / cleaned mouse nest from the air intake and heater air box. Removed valve cover and checked to be sure all valves were free. Removed oil pan and cleaned. Removed oil filter, opened and Inspected. The oil pan was surprisingly clean, just some sludge in the bottom, nothing as far as metal or grit. The oil filter concerned me,it showed some shiny metal colors. Strange thing is it would smear when rubbed between my fingers, not gritty. I did not see any rust or signs of damage in the bottom of the engine, just some water dripping out after I rolled it over a few times with a wrench on the crank pully, the lobes on the cam looked good. I am thinking the next step is to remove the rod caps and take a look. Can someone post the measurements for the rod journals ? What else should I be looking for ?

Thats a water freeze crack for sure. I would check mains too. Go through the oil pump also. Whats with that outer bucket tooth? Broken bolt?

Wow!!! That is a big hole. At least it let the water out....I'd be checking oil coolers as a source of water leakage.

I forgot to mention the radiator was full of the green stuff when I looked at it this summer and when it arrived at my place. The oil cooler looks to be undisturbed.

As far as the bucket tooth, the attachment pin is very loose allowing the droop, That will get attention after I am sure this machine has a future.

If not engine coolant then rain water might be the culprit. I see it has a rain cap on the exhaust but they are not always a water tight seal.

Vandalism? Someone pissed off and poured the oil pan full in hopes the owner would try to work it. In turn ruining the engine? Neighbor kids?

I had neighborhood kids unscrew my fuel cap on my R2 and dumped dirt inside it

Vandalism definitely came to mind as the exhaust pipe was flat black without a stain after I removed muffler, and the paper elements on the air cleaners were not damaged. I did not spend much time on it today but I did note a grey film around one of the rod journal's and that rod was sloppy. Saturday I be back at it.

Nice find Steve. The bucket tooth might need some work on the cutting edge. When the tooth droops it usually a sign that the cutting edge corner is broke or worn. The po did a lot of prying with that tooth. I like the 4in1 bucket

Hi Steve, if the radiator is full of the green stuff, don't think it's own water did the damage, it would not have frozen? Nice find, should be a good addition to your collection.
