Yesterday, before the tornadoes came through Chicago, I went to load up one of my machines that had been stored at a friends barn. It is the one that will either find a new home soon or one day have a completely new rebuilt motor in it, then it won't be for sale anymore. Anyhow, the tractor is basically complete, but with the motor removed for rebuilding. The blade is still attached to the track frames, with the transmission and seat in place. The spring is still in place between the track frames and the trans sits on a chain slung between the top rollers. As we push-loaded the rolling chassis onto my lowbed trailer, butt end first, things went swimmingly until halfway up the ramps, as the sprockets were clear and resting on the deck, the machine quit moving. We tried and tried to the point of shoving the trailer/truck about 3 feet on the gravel. Our first thought was the track had become wedged into the open ramps. Nope. Then I spotted the problem. The motor was no longer bolted to the transmission, which would have limited the travel of the track frames, thus they were allowed to pivot on the cross shaft to the point where the rear-most roller conveniently nestled into a sprocket tooth and effectively applied the parking brakes. We rolled the whole rig downhill until the ramps were at a less severe angle and the machine rolled right up. Another DUH moment and a lesson learned.
