Hi ozcat,
my info shows as below, I have no Parts Book for any of these units to be 100% sure. The jar type may have been available as an option ?
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

OzCat, I believe that Old Magnet was telling you that Cat had not started using the mason jar air cleaner until maybe later on. The correct pre-cleaner for the RD4 is part # 2B4344, sort of a mushroom looking cap, with no jar.

Oh, good luck finding one, LOL

The 7J D4 parts book show at 7J1 to 7J195 they used a screen type pre-cleaner and at 7J196 they started using the jar but it doesn,t say if it,s glass or not but I have scene both on tractors. It lists the same air cleaner as 3B7331 for both serial numbers. The jar number it shows as a 5B2746

I found a neat way to rehab the air precleaners that have rusted screens in them. Get a pair of nibbers like what is used for trimming horses hoofs at a swap meet. The china made ones work fine and they are cheap. Grind down one side flat. The flat side will go on the out side of the leaner as you slowly go all the way around the crimp and open the crimp up to about 45 degrees. This is a good time to clean and paint. Then cut stainless steel screen to fit and close the crimp on it. The screen will out last the Cat and keep out the nasties. I have a good picture of it but don't know how to reduce it so it will send. firpitch
