Had tried to make a deal on this D4 for quite a while, wanted way to much money so I traded scrap for scrap. Hauled in 18,000 lbs and hauled the tractor off.
Everything was frozen, levers, motor, clutch. spent about a full days work and now it is fully operational:D I was prepared for the worst but was pleasantly surprised.
I figured I would be able to free the motor but thought sure the frictions were a gonner.
The air cleaner was dated 1982 and had never seen use, so it is likely that it had been sitting since then.
Here are a few pics. Don

Don, that's another fab find! Congrats. You have the eye for some deals. Also, that first picture is quite a testament to the durability of Caterpillar castings. I never saw a tail seat used as a lifting sling
Glad to hear of your EZ restoration. Add another nice machine to the Tractor Don fleet.

Thanks Bruce, once in a while I luck out:D To many chiefs and not enough Indians that day, just wanted to get it on the trailer. I was not concerned about the tail seat stuff so much, as it will someday be a top seat.
Long ways from being restored, but it is much better than I expected:cool:

Hi, Tractor Don.
Great save. And the fact that everything freed up so easy would have to be a bonus.
Happy restoring.
You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

CR, yes, not bad for out of a scrap pile. I sold the blade, just don't care for the tool bar blade, blade is straight and seen minimal use.
Thanks Deas, it was a bit of a surprise, it did not look good. but did figure I had a chance.
Worst thing is that the undercarriage is completely shot, from front to rear. The rails will take pins and bushings, they measure 3 1/2 or a little better if I recall right. Was a pleasure to meet you at the BSOT's
Krazemofo, I just don't have a use for a tail seat D4, unless I decide to keep it in it's current dress, it will be swapped to a top seat.
Thanks guys, Don

[QUOTE=krazeemofo;the tailseat is great, why switch?[/QUOTE]
Around here the smaller crawlers are easy to find in tailseat....It's just that anyone who has spent some time behind one getting thrown around after crossing the littlest ridge or bump and dirt clods thrown in their face doesn't really care for one. The only time they were really decient to have is driving throught a stone fruit field with a heavy crop right before harvest. The hot ticket out here is a topseat, it seems like most small cats came with fender tanks or tailseats.
Don good luck with your restoration, the loading of that cat reminds me of how I got my 6u in 1990 that was sitting in a welding shops yard. For starters the pony was in a box in the back of the shop with a frost crack in it and a welding crack beside the weld, later I found another crack on the bottom of the lower radiator tank.
Our backhoe was at that shop getting the bushings replaced so the welder decided to use it to push the tractor that had been sitting for 10 years cracking the radiator support and bending the front grill some how a forklift was involved in the operation but I was running for cover by that time.
The tractor was was suposed to be able to tow start but ended up having water in #2 & #3 cylinders, the crank was like new, the tracks had few hours since peterson cat turned the bushings, welded up the sprocket and grouser bar was welded onto the pads. The steering clutches were frozen and the pony was replaced with a direct starter. Can't complain about putting at least 3K of parts into a free tractor.
