D2 rebuild information needed

More

I purchased a D2 a few years ago and am starting to put it back together. It is an early model build in the late 1930's. Where can I get the manuels that give me the rebuilt tolerances and specifications? Will I need to make my own gaskets or are the readily available at the locat cat dealer?

My first task is to go thru the pony motor and the diesel is the next. From what I have read so far, it looks like I need to pull the pistons on the main motor out thru the bottom. I was hoping to rebuild the engine with out taking it out.

Try and see what the serial number is and post it and some guys on here have spec books they can post for you. Yes you can take the pistons out the bottom but takes a little turning of things so it gets out of the way of the crank.Going back is a job if the bottom ring is below the wrist pin.

SJ, The serial # is 5J1334. Any information you can give me would be helpfull. I had head rebuilt and the fellow who did it also welded up some cracks on the head and precombustion chambers and it all looks good. The big engine is stuck and I poured Marvel mystery oil in the cylinders a few years ago hoping to free them up. What is the recommended procedure to free up the pistons. The cylinder wall all look good with minimal rust. I would like to rebuild the engine with out taking it out of the frame.

This is a hobby for me so process will be slow.

When I got the D2 the pony motor was in parts in pails, so far I have had a valve job done on it and purchased new rings. I came with a set of new head gaskets. It looks like a relatively simple engine and getting it running would be a good short term goal. I have previously rebuilt a 26 T ford and a JD 420 C so I have some experience with rebuilding older equipment, but the D2 is alot larger.

I purchased a servicemen's reference book abut it does not give any specks on the pony motor.

Thanks Bob A

Help Guys.

I went to the local Cat dealer to get the manualS, however he could not tell me which of the manuals provides the rebuiLd specks for the engines ( items such as torque specs on bearing, bearing clearances/tolerances and head torque).

I did purchase all of the gaskets for the pony motor and with your help I can get the pony motor put together and hopefully running by the end of the summer.

Anyone please let me know what manuals give me the engines rebuild info.

The main engine and pony motor information can be found in the "Servicemen's Reference Book for the 3-3/4 in. Bore D3400 engine.

Here are the specs for the later pony as most of the specs are the same.
