I have removed the blade assembly from the machine for repairs. Looks like a good time to adjust the tracks! Question is, there are spacers moving the front track wheel(?) forward. The parts book seems to show something similar. Is this okay? How many can I use? Is there a limit point where a different type of service is necessary?
All new to me, any help is appreciated.

Spacers were correct as the early version of accommodating the large (24 in.) front idler. Any other spacers are not correct but did get used as a way of extending the life of the undercarriage when it is worn well beyond the limits of the normal adjustment.

The operator manual shows max exposed thread on adjustment @ 4.0" for late models & 3.25" for early models. No mention of what is early or late model as far as serial # break or style.
I removed the spacer bolts and pulled front idlers w/ track forward as far as I could. The space opened up to the point where it would take a 2.5" spacers on the left track and a 4.0" spacers on the right. I can make solid spacers this size, but this seems a bit extreme to inexperienced me. Even as little as this machine will actually be used for anything, I would like it to be correct or close to it.
AH, Baffled again!
P.S. Not to impressed with the photocopy quality of the manuals I purchased. Any ideas on good quality copies or even originals.

See the next post below "Track/pin wear" and check your rails. Seems like your rails are worn out and then some.
As a general reference "early" is prior to the "U" models.
You can get quality reprints from:
www.cat.com/cda/layout?m=90800&x=7
Or
Check and watch ebay under "Caterpillar construction equipment" for originals.
The Jensales stuff is junk......but of coarse they advertise in the ACMOC magazine.
