Looks like corner of exhaust manifold on the left but I don't recognize the casting on the right but I'd guess a head gasket problem and probably on a D330 or D333 which are famous for warped/cracked heads. Am I close;)

That green isn't dried creek scum, it's really green. This one has more drama than just a blown gasket.

Guess I missed the green......I don't do well at recognizing some colors.

John Deere 4020 or 3020? or 4430? Looks like she pooped out the head gasket, I've been around JD engines for 35 years, never seen one do that...

the next fact in the trail is that at exactly 180* on the crankshaft markings it has a hard spot as you turn it over by hand. (JD 404 6 cylinder in a 4020 -firing order 153624 I believe)

Tractor has been running for years around the farm and I believe the engine is a reman shortblock, but I can't remember for sure. Anyway it was running fine, pulling silage wagons late Friday afternoon.

Remember, I'm not telling the obvious, yet.

And Ron, the reason you and I haven't ever seen one do that is..............?

I"m wondering if a coolant leak developed internally and the engine was shut down for a while. Then when it was restarted, a hydraulic lock happened in one cylinder and pushed the head gasket and twisted the crankshaft all at the same time? Just a question. . .

The D318 engine which was used esp. in the 8U & 9U D6s had a habit of seeping along the outside of the head so I never put one together without coating the gasket along that outside edge with #2 permatex and it took care of it. I also put a thin coat on one side of the gasket all over it to help with leakage which could occur down the road whch they did at times.

Ol Grump, you're gettin there, just keep thinking along those lines, but no, the engine was running at the time. That's a major factor in this.

Okay, here's my guess. Leaked in on tops of pistons and they swelled and scored the pistons and liners all to heck??
