Leaky Sprocket Seals

More
16 years 4 months ago #18568 by James Hayes
A few months ago I purchased a 1955 D4-7U. The 95 year old gentleman I bought the tractor from had retired from a local CAT dealer after 30+ years, and had completely rebuilt the D4 bottom-end about 20 years ago. The dozer had less than 25 hours since the rebuild. The seller pointed out 2 small leaks on the final drive.

Last week my son was topping-off all the fluid levels, when oil began running all over the left side sprocket of the final drive. I suspect the sprocket seals are shot from years of sitting idle. I don't have a big Spanner wrench or a 25 ton "push-pull" sprocket remover. Anyone ever replaced their sprocket seals in their shop, without specialty tools?

Any help, or words of advice, will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, James
