A long, long time ago, my brother came home with a 3/4 ton GMC that was on a 1 ton chassis supposedly with larger brakes and heavier axles. My buddy and I hitched a non-running, non-braking 12,000lb truck on and towed from Rochester, NY to Allegany, NY. There were a few long grades and a couple "Dang-It" brake stomps at intersections. I never would have gotten away with it without a 4 speed and NEVER having to totally stop at those intersections as he was too heavy!
Years later I got stopped with a bigger truck at a DOT stop in wonderful NYS and would have lost everything but managed to get out of it with a lot of fines.
Sometime after that I lost my brakes on a log truck on a long downgrade.
Again overloaded for the vehicle and conditions.
Moral of my Wisdom?
Hire a Dang truck!!!!
OR Borrow a Big enough one!!

Lots of those old tractors are heavier than the shipping weight says they are. From addons or dirt and grease accumulation. It adds up more than it looks like. A fifty is a big tractor, it is what became the RD7 and then the D7. I suppose the gas would be lighter than the diesel, but still is a lot of weight, probably more than you are planning on. I say use a bigger truck.
2-22dud, I think it goes more like "HEY WATCH THIS, SOMEBODY HOLD MY BEER"

I've hauled everything from Cat D3's to Cat657 scrapers on lowboys,and I don't think I would even think about what you are thinking of doing. You would be what we are considered to be back east here with an over size load,that would be US DEPT. OF AG. PRIME RIB to the police. You would only have to be spotted by a cop and your day would come to a quick stop. Back east I have never been caught for over my posted gross weight but they get me dam near everytime for axle weight.It only my 2 cents here but I would hire someone to do it for me.Good luck Mike Durkin

I move small to way-to-large equipment. I am in Connecticut, sorry I think we are worse than NY when it comes to commercial/vehicle weight inforcement sine the last couple of truck crashes here. The enforcement "gods" will pick on a u-haul truck or small guy with a trailer behind his pick-up that looks overloaded before they chase me down weighing 130,000 lbs. That is what a friend of mine who is a trooper that does commercial vehical inforcement calls a "gift from god". The truck will be tagged out-of-service along with the trailer. This will happen in a parking lot or on the side of the road and there will be a tow bill from a heavy duty towing company. Here in CT that starts at $350/hour port to port. I would go do that move here in the east now for about $750.00 round trip. You should be able to find a back haul that would do it for $3-400. With the fuel prices, its worth the money. I used to be able to get tractors from Jim Zimmerman to CT for $800-1000, and that is a 1300 mile trip. Not today. enought rambling. Safe bet, pay the move.

I would find a bigger trailer if I would try it. I doubt the 20,000 lbs rating is plus the trailer weight. the trailer itself probably weights 4,000 which gives a payload of 16,000 lbs, which puts you 2,000 over the gvr of the trailer. Plus tractor wt 18,000
tlr apx wt 4,000
pickup wt 7,000
total 29,000
If you figure the max load on 10 ply tires
12 tires
2950 average load rating on 10ply duals
35,000 max rating
figure 75% safety factor = 26550 lbs
You might be able to pull it and shut down but the gvw looks pretty spooky to me. JUST MY OPINION THO. Good luck Justin

They have been chasing down the little guys too. My brother said they stopped him with his horse trailer and 1 ton, they inspected it and told him he is required to have a log book. He hauls his trailer and horses 40 miles one way once every 2 months to the Amish Blacksmith shop for shoes. Why on earth would he be required to have a log book? Its not in the Federal Commerce Standards! They are desparate for money to fill the Governors coffers!!!!!
As far as the CAT 50 hauling, I still say hire a flatbed or if you are licensed to drive, then borrow one for a saturday and pay for the fuel plus a dinner or two for the owner.

I have someone willing to lend me a drop deck trailor, and now I am working on a truck. One of the neighbor farmers has a Western Star that I am waiting for an answer on. If not I have another neighbor that I can ask. I did not realize that the rating of 20000 included the trailor weight. Good information.
