Thirty starting crank shaft

Ok, back to serious. Both starter shafts I have for Cat thirty have been bent and worn out. I would like to save the jaw. So has anyone here done a cut, weld, & lathe job to fix one up. ? This one looks like it has been machined before with a machete Also the bronze bearing collar will need some work.

Remove old shaft from jaw and make new shaft , simple enough, cut and weld is not as good

I have one where we cut the bad shaft off, bored the jaw part, made a new shaft and welded it on the jaw end. It is still on the shelf but I will not get pictures until tonight and most likely will not post them until Monday.
Thanks
Ken

2. bore jaw .007 small
3. cut new shaft to right size
4. heat jaw and insert shaft ( shrink fit)5. Ride off into sun set and have a beer

Make sure you index the jaw to shaft position correctly.
you want it to engage and release at the correct positions

a few degrees off will put you in bad position when pulling it over the top.

Remember - right hand on radiator (air cleaner inlet - makes a choke) - pull crank toward you with the left, keeps you out of harms way if she kicks!

Thanks for all your great ideas. The one that didn't come immediately to mind was indexing the woodruff keyway to the jaw position. Since it has been welded before, I will have to take special care, perhaps I need to get the gear cover off the parts engine to see if it is a better sample.

I did it for one of mine, cut the shaft of, made a new shaft with bevel on the end for welding and a 1/4 inch pin for sticking out the end to match up with a center drilling in the paw. Indexing is important, then Tig welded.. made new bearing/ flange assembly, worked like a charm

Just a little cutting and welding today. The shaft was plenty oversize to allow for welding mis alignment and an old beat up exterior. Turns out it was shiny on the inside after all.
This is how I indexed the shaft for cutting the keyway.
