Magneto Problem was created by SHORTORDER
I have a brother that knows nothing about a magneto on his D6 and I know even less. The problem is that he burned up a set of points in the magneto and has been attempting to replace them. He brought a set off points and says he can not set them for some reason. Says there not CAT point and they can not be set, that the aftermarket will not fit correctly. I think he is doing something wrong. Anyone have and ideal what he could be doing wrong. With as little information I have given can anyone figure what he might be doing wrong. One thing I know for sure he has not adjusted the timeing at all, I'm thinking this could be a problem. I really do not know enough to give you more information. If there is more information you might need to help figure out the problem, let me know and I well provide it as needed. Thank for your time. SHORTORDER

D6 what? It will have a serial number on the engine just below the head gasket line in front of the pony motor on the left side.

Mostly the timing won't ever change unless something breaks. It is set when the mag is installed so unless he has unbolted the whole mag, he should still be ok.

CAT has the points for most all the old magnetos so if those won't work, then get the ones that will. Clearance is usually set to between .016 and .018" with the points rub block on the highest spots of the cam. When its right it should throw a bright spark about a quarter inch to the block if you hold a wire near and spin the engine over.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D
