Leaking Gasoline Valve

More

The gas valve that turns the gas off from the tanks leak where the stem comes out of the valve by the packing nut.Valve part number 3640-A, I tried tightening the packing nut but that doesn't do it. Is there suppose to be some king of packing material around the stem for a seal? Or what do I have to do to get it to stop leaking?

There is packing under the packing nut. I have repacked them with water pump packing, but I have had to keep tightening them to keep them from leaking. If any one have a good packing to work with gas please let us know.
Thanks
Ken

Hello,
If you can, check with a outboard shop that repairs some of the older Johnson or Evinrude outboard engines. The carb needles used packing on them. I know that gasoline will not affect them. I think that these packing washers would work on the shutoff valves.
