I second the ethanol free gas, saves a lot of potential fuel related issues. It’s really easy to find a station that has it these days, at least around here. I also run Seafoam or some similar product to help with moisture/stale gas problems. Thanks.

Bryan,
Maybe no problem in your area but some of us live in CA. If the powers that be had their way, we would not be able to get ANY gas period! I go down to a local general aviation airport (oh yes, the tree huggers are trying to close that down too) and get AV Gas for my old CATs. It hurts a bit while my billfold gets pulled through my nose but I do get some respite from the ethanol gas!

Juiceman,
Thanks for the laughs! I now feel like I am in good company complaining about the busted/torn knuckles, sore hands and insults by all those within earshot when starting the "pony" on that "tailseat 3J D2".
Last time I had anything to do with it - was the best! The "pony" did not have to run and the starter was a chain tied to a "persuader" with a short bar for starter! NO ARGUMENTS with that arrangement!
At least you can find the flywheel on the pony on a D4!
A local had a D4 that was beyond "worn out", had a Briggs & Stratton tied to fender, used a belt to flywheel with an Idler to tighten the belt. Gave the "pony" enough speed to overcome it's weakness. Amazing how well it worked for him.
I agree, you have the "pony" in partial disassembly - do it right! Much easier that pulling it a second time!
No ethanol in gasoline -- like we have much choice -- Airport would be the only one outside of "racing fuel".
Old buddy of mine, now long past, swore by MMO -- Marvel Mystery Oil. His old Thirty still running, always had a "treatment" of MMO.
Happy New Year everyone!

I have been using aviation gas for a number of years. I guess I'm not concerned about the price because 10 gallons lasts me 6 months. I use it in the string trimmer, chain saws and pony engines. Now we have a new gasoline station in our town named VP. Their racing fuel is ethanol free however, the price is $10.00 per gallon. Jan, if you think aviation gas is high, don't stop in at VP. Aviation gas also has a little bit of lead which our old ponies were raised on and fuel stabilizer added after the refining process.

If a guy really wanted ethanol free gas, he could simply add water to the fuel and let it sit. The alcohol and water would separate to the bottom and you could skim off straight gasoline from the top.

Guess we are lucky. Nearly every station here has at least one pump of 92 octane non oxygenated gas. It runs about $3:00 a gallon or about $.75 more than regular. Sticker on every pump. Legal for use in off road and classic vehicles only or something to that effect.
