OK I blew it, I had the chance to buy an R4 with cable blade and D4 winch, I hesitated because engine is stuck couldn't move gear shift or steering clutches (may have been the 2 feet of snow on machine) , now scrapman has offered $1800.00. My main question is will the D4 winch that fits an R4 fit my D47U (he offered it to me before scapman comes)?? Or is there anyone in the southern NY area interested in this machine to save it from scrap. I could have bought it two weeks ago for less but don't have time to fix what I already have. I would like to put the winch on my 4 if possible but if anyone else is interested in the dozer it can be had. The owner and I would like to save it from scrap but he needs money and I can't keep buying iron without selling something (I have about 15 now). By the way he said he was using it and the magneto quit and its been sitting at least 5 years by my guess, parttime under a tarp.

The winch will mount on the 7U but the upper mounts, seat bracket and control mounting are different. Early units did not have the mounting provision on the top transmission case that the later units have and made use of brackets mounted to the seat support.

You'll have to fabricate a pair of mounts that use the rear two bolts on either side of the transmission lid to bolt the winch to. I have a D47U that someone mounted an older Hyster winch on. .markings on the side are D4, not D4N. According to the guy I talked to at Cat, the winch may have originally been made for an R, J or T series, he wasn't sure.

As long as you get the splined coupling, all the linkage and levers, it'll bolt right on and with the addition of the top mounts you'd manufacture yourself it'll work like a champ even though it wasn't specifically designed for the U model. About the only thing that might have to be modified will be the shifter. I'm in the process of slowly redesigning mine so not only will have a detent but also out of the way of my left ankle.

How about this match up?
Will a D4 E winch (mounted on a D4 C) fit onto a late D4 7U (7U42000) machine?
