What,s a 3401 engine and what,s it used in if there is such an engine.I,ve been away from the dealer several years now and the only 3400 series I knowed of then was the smaller 6 cyl. of them a 3406 used in some equip. but was a popular HD OTR truck engine till it was updated to a newer engine. There was a 3408 V-8 and also a 3412 V-12 and altho. the 3408 was used in OTR trucks some they both were mostly used in equip.& industrial power.

Whitepine & SJ,
The 3401 is a later version of the SCOTE (Single Cylinder Oil Test Engine) based on the 3400. It is used only for lab work in testing and qualifying lube oils. I believe it is still used as the oil test engine, currently. At least it was when I retired at the end of 2006.
I assume a parts book and operator's manual exists, but have never had occasion to need one. Since it is a current and a more recent design, I would expect the manuals to be available from Cat. Maybe your local Cat Dealer can help.
Good Luck!

I was kind of thinking that was what it was but never saw or heard of one of those. I have seen several of those test engines at equip. shows but not the 3401.I am wondering if the manuals are even sold over the counter to individuals at the dealers, but just guessing.

I've tried the dealers, no luck yet. It was made as the first patent for the caterpillar engine. Then it was used as an oil test engine when SAE cert. oil (I don't know the year testing started) as it is still used to day foroil testing.

whitepine,
Are you looking for the manuals for the 3401? Or for the original oil test engine which was referred to as SCOTE?
The 3401 was designed in the 1990's as an upgrade and was based on the 3406 engine design. The SCOTE was designed much earlier (sorry, I don't know the date) to assist the oil industry in improving, developing, and rating oil for the diesel engine manufacturers. It sticks in my mind that the bore was 5.75" on the original, but don't hold me to that. It has been a long time since I worked on this program. The original oil test engine is no longer produced.
Maybe OLd Magnet can jump in here. I bet he has engine literature on this program in his personal collection.

If this engine is the same bore as the production regular 3406 then they were a 5.4" bore. 5 3/4" was (is) the bore of the D8 varity of engines and a few other ones like the D7 4 cyl. and a few industrial engines.

SJ,
Yes, the 3401, based on the 3406 has a 5.4" bore. The previous engine, (SCOTE or 1Y73) I think is based on the D8/D7 engine and has a 5.75 bore if memory serves me.

One time I went to an old equip. show in Ohio and they had an old D17000 oil testing engine there but it seems they used 2 cylinders as the D17000 is a V-8 and same bore as the D7 & D8 of 5 3/4". and the D364 & D375 & the D386 & D397 all had the 5 3/4" bore pistons in them too.
