I might have a hard time explaining my problem ,but here go'es.
the transmission in my d2 went south a while back.
Come to find out, the two 5/16 bolts that hold the bottom transmission shaft fell out and the shaft fell to the bottom of the case.
Did'nt hurt anything ,so i disassembled the remaining parts and pieces.
After i cleaned everything I installed the lower shaft and gears.
I installed the spacer just as the book say's the bolts and finally the retainer and just before i put on the bottom shaft cover i grabbed the shaft and turned it wiggled it,and was able to move the shaft front to back 1/4".
The front bearing was sliding on the bearing retainer .
That bring me to the 25.00 question.
What keeps the bearing in the retainer solid. or do'es the top row of gears etc stablize it. ??????
Surely, there has to be a D2 TRANSMISSION EXPERT
HOW ABOUT IT CC JERSEY/OL MAGNET YOU GUY'S SEEM TO BE THE EXSPERTS ON D2

If all the pieces are there it should not have any axial movement other than internal bearing clearance. The cover should clamp the outer bearing race in place. If the bearing got loose and spun in the housing it could explain the clearance you are experiencing. If that is the case you may need a new bearing cage and cover.

OL MAG THANKS FOR REPLY.
The problem is, there is a retainer clip on the inboard part of the bearing retainer,but what keep the bearing from going the other way towards the front cover ?

When I reassembled the transmission on my D2 5U7066, after the lower gear shaft and gears were installed, the front bearing inner race bottoms out against a spacer in front of the gears, which rigidly attaches it to the shaft when the front bolts and washer is installed. The bearing outer race bottoms out in the rear of the bearing retainer, and the retainer cover has a shoulder on the back of it that ensures the bearing stays fixed at the rear of the retainer when the cover is installed. This way after everything is assembled the lower shaft doesn't move forward or back. I think your setup is similar.

You are so right.I did'nt realize that the cover had a sholder that went inside the retainer.Thank you so much.
THIS BOARD IS SOMETHING ELSE
COMPRESSOR.

MAG, yes.
Toby made me realize the end cover had a sholder that goes inside the retainer secures the bearing.
I should be able to carry on with the project,of coarse until some other problem comes up.
