How can this legitimately be a 5U with the serial number plates shown?

I could see a repower, but not the serial numbers matching.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

Is it just me or is the serial number tag pictured missing a rivet? Maybe someone switched tags for whatever reason, I dunno. Doesn't really look like a "J" altered to look like a "U" on the tag. Everything else is D3400 in the pictures.

Sure looks like a 5J to me: starter fuel tank, aircleaner, intake manifold,radiator/oil cooler, injection pump/governor, but where in the world did they get those goofy idlers? or is it an optical illusion? They look huge.

Be interesting to see the tag on the back housing. My guess is they put an entire 5J front end on a whacked out 5U and kept the 5U engine tag, or it's just a plain 5J front to back. What's for sure: that ain't no 5U engine, no way.

Probably a later U series chasis with the large front idlers. You're right it certainly doesn't have that "rocking horse" appearance that the small idlers and sprocket give to the D2.

Might have some of the other goodies from the later tractors if he knew what to look for.

Replied by drujinin on topic He also has
relisted a beautifully restored tractor on EBay that was on before and sold then the guy couldn't pay. Makes me wonder if the missing rivet is where it didn't come out of another block?

Drive pins are not hard to get. Seems strange that if someone was going to change tags that they would be so sloppy as to not get new pins.

Raises more questions.....

Replied by SJ on topic parts
Don,t think either one is the same from a J to a U series D2 so wouldn,t work to try and exchange them.

SJ is right, the U series blocks and heads have totally different coolant and oil passages than the J series. The heads would never interchange.

to answer some of your questions this is exactly how i got this machine and the only interaction i have had with it is dragging it on and off my truck. i dont know enuff about the d-2 tractors other than that the engine does look somewhat different than the nice d-2 i have. anyway it will be a good project or parts machine for someone, i have too many projects so im thinning the herd a bit.
