I am ready to assemble my pony with new main bearings. I am unsure how to ensure that crank end play will be in spec. Should I assemble the bottom end and adjust one or both bearings then dissaemble to install the bearing pins? How do you compensate for gasket compression on the rear cover? Where is end play measured?

Install the bearings and center the dowel holes and install the dowels. Then put the crank in and assemble and it should be ok. The thrust is taken at the front (diesel) side of the crank where the gear is on. The rear (flywheel end) bearing has nothing to do with thrust or the gasket. The specs. calls for a max. of .025" end clearance.
