D25U mag question

D25U mag question was created by Al Letts
Hey All

I determined that my pony magneto (bosch) is not producing any spark output. Seems many have told me to change the condensor first and check the points. I pulled the condensor and it ppears to be a bosch part. Can this be procured from a NAPA house or do I need to go to CAT for a replacement? Points look okay but I'll be checking the gap next.

TIA

Al,

Probably any automotive condenser (as long as it is ok electrically (used- ie an old one from a previous car/pu tuneup)) which will fit in it will work ok. Worst that could happen would be faster point wear (and how fast do pony hours accumulate anyway?).

Daron

P. S. Al I did read your PM about a month or so after it was sent. I rarely receive PMs therefore do not have the habit of noticing the PM s'score box'.

Keep warm and good luck on the employment front- don't you just love aerospace/high tech? (You're a migrant worker one way or the other- either change employer's or work sites far too often!)

Hi Daron,

Well tried a substitute cap and was still no go, them suspecting the plug leads, changed them and got a spark, decided to chance it an replaced the origional cap and it remained a good sparking unit. Yippee. Well wamer weather and I'll retime it to pony and reinstall. Got to find new plugs for the pony. Also thinking of schleping off the carb to get it cleaned and rebuilt. Then it's reinstall the replacement starter drive unit and replacement electric starter and we'll try for a pony start. I'll have to re-install the fenders to go for a main engine attempt as well as get some new gauges.

hope the have the pony running by next week end.

Well on the job front, I remember the test crew at Edwards north site migrating from Boeing WA to the flight centers at Edwards and also La. I'm more alaigned with the engine makers who tend to tay put thankfully but with the recent globalization now we're jumping countries. But this time I fear I'll have to make a drastic change. Thankfully the skill set remains needed and desired in alot of industries. I"m still trying to enter one of them.
