I went and checked out this old Cat that is sitting in a field not far from my home. I have an eye on it for parts- it has a winch, a cage with sweeps, and a few other bits I can use. Pony is missing its mag and a few other items are gone. Before I go bother the owner, does anyone know anything about this winch arrangement? Is it common? Does it work well? Anyone else need 5J parts?
There was also a nearly as old International crawler of roughly the same size sitting by it, actually looking more like a runner. I can get more pics if you are interested.

I have never seen a Holt winch, but that sure is Holt's data plate. Is that a free-spool clutch above the top of the gear case? When you get into that unit, do let us know how it works.

Holt winches are not all the common but as far as I know they were good units.
Here's one on a D4...

Sorry, I don't know anything about Holt winches.
Those are both good looking tractors. The idler picture appears to show pretty thick rails, a good thing on a D2. I'd bother the owner! Interesting that both have had the exhaust pipes similarly "modified". They must have worked in the woods or brush at some point. I like that little bit of character.
Pete.

Great looking tractor, someone has had the LH cover off the winch and put it back on with just a couple of bolts, I wonder what they found inside?

Well, it has been hell trying to figure out who owns this old Cat. My neighbor, whose family has been in the area for 90 years, thinks they belonged to an old logger who died a few years back. Today I wrote a letter saying I want to buy the D2 and left it at the business next door. Recently a couple of Ford N9 tractors that are on the same lot disappeared, so I am getting nervous. Today I am finishing up installing a winch on my trailer, which will make a much more effective equipment vulture...

Greg, you could find out who owns the parcel of land that it's sitting on and contact those people. Your city office will have that information.

So my phone rang tonite, I guess this guy got my note. He says he will sell me the D2 for $1500, and that it runs and drives. He said the pony "needs some work". Since the intake and exhaust manifolds are missing, mag and other bits are missing I would say so. He said they got the diesel running a couple years ago by hooking a belt to it in his driveway. I don't think so. For one thing, I have been driving past it for at least three years, probably four. I asked him if the winch works and he said "yeah", and then he said "oh yeah it has a winch on it, I forgot". I pointed out that it looks like the winch has been disassembled for some reason and most of the side cover screws are missing, what was up with that... he did not really answer that question. He said he got the D2 and the International from "some old guy" a few years back.
So, I don' think this guy has a clue, not sure how he came to be able to say he owns them, but I am pretty sure he has never seen either one run.
Not sure what to do next. Maybe offer him a grand?
