nice job looks clean. did you have to do much adjustment of the pinon latch or dose you out put RPM match the old motor with the new gearing. i will say it would be nice to have a recoil some days on my one pony lol

I did have to adjust the tension springs bit I don't know if it was because of the new motor. It wouldn't stay engaged with the old pony motor. It does work fine now.

Interesting !! over here in England a D2 would be seen as a collector tractor ,maybe used for working at shows and a odd job on the farm just for fun , so any change from factory spec would be a no no.
so I'm curious do you guys in the US see these old say pre 1970 tractors as working or as hobby tractors??
the hobby type farms here run the kubota type compacts or older wheeled tractors and people doing a self build home seem to buy a backhoe loader or mini 360 ... or just get a contractor in ....

The purists wouldn't be happy with it, but I put it together to use on my farm. And there is no reason that an original pony motor couldn't be put back on.

I would like to see a educated guess on how many per 1970 Cats have been restored and how are out on acreage that get used every year or a project that puts 100 hours on it every 2 or 3 years.

I would guess more gas and diesel Cats D4 size and under get used 3 hours to 3 days every year in California than restored ones that are shiny or petted and fawned over by someone like Garlic Pete that likes patina.

Any way you want to start your Cat is good with me,as long as thought was put into staying safe.Hand cranks are not a fail safe method from the beginning, without someone showing you what to do.Tuning on a pony is not what I like to work on,but is the little devil from China better in 10 years? But I like the rest of your engineering.
