Holt 45 hp engine Coolant Flow

Greetings to all. I am working out the cooling system on a Holt 45 hp engine and have run into a problem/question.
The engine has the original radiator but has the return flow from the head going into the bottom of the cooling coils and the cold water which enters at the front of the crankcase going up a pipe to the top. I always thought the hot water goes in the top and the cool water goes out the bottom to enter the bottom of the cylinders and move up. My question is: does this radiator cool from the bottom up and is it wise to run the cool water into the top of the head and heat up as it moves down thru the cylinder jugs. Maybe there is a really good reason for running the flow this way... just doesnt make sense to me. You Holt and early Cat guys help me out. Thanks, Jim.
