Something I was taught by men who are now all dead.

When hand cranking any engine, if you do not want to run the risk of a broken arm or wrist, always pull UP on the crank and keep your thumb and fingers on the same side of the handle.

I have found that to be very good advice..... Engine kicks back and crank spins at several hundred RPM flailing your arm.
