Hello, I was wondering if there was such a thing as a model/engine chart that showed what typically came in what. Reason is in my shopping for a D2 I have come accros a couple of machines that have clapped out engines and I was wanting to price parts for a rebuild. Thanks for all replies as I build my Cat knowledge.

You typically need a serial number to make sure what engine is in the machine in question and to make sure you get the correct parts for your engine. There were upgrades and changes in all the engines over time and the engine model changed in some machines over time as well. (usually with a different series of numbers to mark the change over point)

Your D2s could have only the D3400 (J series up to 1947) or the D311 (U series '47/8 up to late 50's) engines. These engines were also used in the 212 graders, Trackson loaders built on the Caterpillar tractors, CAT generator sets and industrial engines as well as (I belive I am right) the early 933 track loader up to a certain age when a new style D311 was used (not the same engine as before) The even later 933 used a D320 turbocharged engine, so early ones are the only ones that might interchange.

D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D
