Hello fellow Cat lovers.
I just found your site, while searching for parts for my D4 4G farm Cat.
This cat was gotten by my Grandfather new back in the late 1930's.. It sat for some 30 years when I started to play with it as a small boy at 10 years of age. Well one day with enough gas, oil and pulling I got it running one day. I can remember to my Grandads surprise,, as he had just pulled started it for years with another tractor then later parked it for good..
Well I would fire it up from time to time over the years and when I came back to farm full time, I started farming with the D4.. It is a narrow gauge with no hyd power or blade. It showed 7400 hours on it when I first took title over.
Well later on I figured out how to bolt on a hyd pump on the timing cover where the generator went on Cats with headlights. That idea worked real good for about 10 minutes when the fiber cam gear tore the teeth off.. Well I lucked out and a friend of mine had a cam gear off a D6 that was all steel,, and replace it.. Found out later that Cat only used a fiber cam gear for about 2 years. I later built a frame work to support a 4"X 26" 2 way hyd cyl and made a dozer blade for it.
Since that time I have ran it allot doing nasty clean ups in old wind breaks and other dozing jobs one would never take a rubber tire tractor. Well it now shows 10,600 hours on the clock. It still starts good, and runs great.
Today we went out to get a trailer load of firewood. The old Cat had not ran since sometime early summer. We fired it up as any of my rubber tire tractors around the farm could not handle the 6" of snow on top of the 1" of ice under it all pulling our fire wood trailer. It took a few pulls on the pony motor, but off she went. Oiled it all up and off to the wood lot we go.
Well all was going good, got the trailer loaded and unloaded. I then offered to let my son in law to drive it back to the shop. He was a little jerky slamming in the clutch,, and looks like he tore the clutch facing off the driven plate as it just stopped pulling. Now the clutch will not lock back and took the inspection cover off and found allot of clutch fuzz all over the inside of the case. I think it just tore the lining off the rivets..
So I'm on the Internet trying to find a good source for repairs.. Any help here would be great!!
While I have the transmission cover off, I'm thinking about replacing the steering clutches with newer style clutch plates.. I know at one time someone was telling me about all this and with newer clutches I could run them in oil wet and have allot better service out of them.. Anyone know of this trick?? I would think I would also need different brake bands also.??
Anyway,, plan on digging deeper into this site. and learn and share what I know about catskinen..
I have a little web site,, covering my farm raised fuel I'm making.
