SJ on this 3400 engine i am working on i just got time and set the liners they are real tight [had to pound them in]with out the o rings. All them stick up between the 2 and 6 thousand you said. Now next question thease liners fit in the bore real
needed the puller to get them back out after checking height tite at he bottom. When i start to put them in with the o rings should i set up something to press them in instead of trying to pound them down. I was thinking that pounding them they may jump up and down and cause a o ring to get cut. I have never worked on any thing with wet liners before:confused: And can you tell me what the ring clearence should be at the ends. all help is welcome

The spec book from Cat that I have doesn,t show the end clearance but they usually are always ok when they come from the factory esp. genuine Cat rings but the old custom was .003" per inch of bore so I,d say if you have .010" to .012" would be good for yours.As for your lners being tight in the bore normally they are loose to drop in without the seals being installed so I,m wondering if you have some rust & scale built up down in the bottom bores of the block. They need to be polished smooth & clean of all build up. Also make sure the chamfer (45 degree cut) on the top side of the bottom bore is also clean & free from scale & build up to protect the seals as they enter the bore.Some guys on here say they use waterless hand soap to lubricate the seals & the bottom bore surface but at the shop we always used the white Lubra-Plate grease but don,t use any regular grease gun type grease or the likes. You can take a bar of steel & span across two studs & draw the liners down in place but holes will need to be drilled in the bar of steel so it will drop down over the studs.At the shop at times we used a puller bar (plate) thats machined out inside of it from both ends & the middle left in for support.Let us know what you find or make out with it.

Thanks SJ. I cleaned the bores with a wire wheel and then sand paper also the slope at the top. I will be good on ring clearence there is at least 10-12 tho, end clearence when slid down in the sleeve:) Will start on liners tommoro i hope. I am going to put the pistons in the liners first then drop them in. I made a bracket from two long bolts and plate can sit it on top of liner then a little push.

Sj have all the liners in and pistons. Rod bearing checked out with in specks. Ready to start cleaning oi pan and pump assy and put them back on. Then i can sit it on the floor and start head and other things.

I,m glad things are working out now in getting the 3400G back together.Yes those liner bores at the bottom need to be perfectly clear from buildup.Keep us posted how it all works out when your finished. SJ
