I don,t have a parts book to check the weight but from my memory it seems they were aound between 5 & 6 ton but not sure. I have rebuilt dozens of them & they are a heavy engine but at the shop we had the equip. to handle them.

The '50's 397 weighed from 10,700 lbs (Naturally aspirated) up to 11,250 lbs (fitted with a Rootes blower) according to my 1957/58 product line brochure.

Catsilver, The early D397 was a 10B roots blown & the natural asp. was called a D386 but then the later ones came out & they were a 41B either NA or turbocharged. These later ones had the Ex. manifold coming straight out from the head where the early ones had a 90 degree casting on the head & the Ex. manifold came up from the bottom to the head. We had so many of them both here in the area powering big drag lines in the coal strippings when coal was king as they,d say around here. The V-8 D364-D375 advanced the same as the D386-D397 did & there were lots of the D375s around here years ago too but very few of the early D364 NAs.
