Hey Fellas
I finally got the head off this 7U I'm bringing back to life. How much pitting is acceptable in the liner wall? #1 liner has a a couple of pits about the depth of a 2 millimeters and about as big as a pencil lead and they are low on the wall.
Number 4 is so rusted I may have to replace it but I cannot get the piston out past the rust for now to pull the liner using conventional tools or techniques. How best to pull the liner with the piston in place?
Also, can I re-use liners from another engine and if so, do I I need to use the piston from the other engine as well.
Will all 7U pistons and cylinders interchange?
What parts will I need to buy if I replace the liners with used ones, just the seals at the bottom of the liner?
Thanks in advance
David

David,
Have you tried loosening the piston by using a sturdy hardwood battern and large (4 lb+) lump hammer from the underside of the engine block to knock it upwards? It did the trick for me once I had pre-soaked the piston \ liner in diesel.
Presumably you may be apply the same technique to remove the liner, but it would probably be better to use a jack to apply greater pressure (i haven't tried it before).
Can you post any pictures of the pitted liner on the BB?
All the 4 1/2 bore pistons \ liners from the D315 engine used in the U series tractors (6U & 7U) are interchangeable, as can the 4 1/2 bore pistons & liners from the 6 cylinder D318 engine in the 8U & 9U tractors.

If you turn the engine over with hand crank the piston will either go past rust or shove the liner out then after piston and liner are out press piston out the bottom

When I have had stuck pistons in the past,I have boiled up some oil in a saucepan, then pour it on top of the piston.Leave it for a few minutes and try it.Be carefull of the hot oil.
