Back in July I posted a clutch problem on my 933 serial #42A8712. Housing was full of water & oil, the clutch would not disengage. After draining & filling with rust buster it broke loose. I was able to push the lever foreward engage the main transmission with little or no grinding and shift foreward to reverse & drive the machine back & forth with no problem. I drained the rust buster solution out and left the machine till last week. When I loaded it on the trailer to transport to to my shop I unloaded it backed it into the shop corner using foreward reverse the steering clutches & brakes with no problems-it ran great.
Now I start to do some work on her first I put the plug back in the flywheel housing and filled with 17 qts. SAE30. When I ran the machine to reposition the bucket and move about 2 feel foreward I was unable to get iti nto gear again. I don't understand when dry it works fine with oil it will not disengage. I noticed in the parts manuel there is a pump, group #4H7498 can anyone tell me the function of this pump?. Thanks for any help in advance

The oil causes some "coupling" of the rotating flywheel and the stationary pressure plate, sort of like a very inefficient torque converter. Without any oil, it drags less.
Your transmission brake must not be adjusted properly. When the transmission is out of gear, the transmission input shaft can rotate easily and the oil will get it spinning along with the engine if the clutch brake doesn't have enough friction to stop it when you push forward.
The oil pump circulates oil through the clutch plates and keeps things cool.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time:D

The brake would prevent the gears from grinding when engaging. If the clutch will not disengage at all I would suspect the interlock mechanism adjustment but I can't explain why it would act differently with or without oil unless it just enough to change clearances.
The two section scavenge/oil supply pump operation was described in the service manual info I sent before which I still have on file. Here it is again. Be sure suction screen is clean.

You should not run the engine without oil in the clutch,you are lucky the pump did not sieze,you need to check all the adjustments and do some work with the machine so the metal parts of the clutch polish up,the oil can cause a drag but if the clutch brake is working it should be able to hold the output shaft when the lever is pushed forward,if the flywheel or intermediate disc is rusted up its a different storey, there is drain holes in the flywheel to allow the oil that is pumped through the discs to escape if some or all the holes were blocked it can cause the discs to be clamped together by oil pressure,a few hrs work might free things up a bit and don't be afraid to slip the clutch some,other than making sure the brake and adjustment is ok and doing some work with it there is little that can be done with the clutch in situ.

Thanks for your insight will adjust that break and see if that helps. Your explanation & Old Magnet's never ending source of printed material backed up my suspicions. Will keep you posted probably not for awhile. Again thanks, now onto removing floor boards & inspection plates again.
