Right all around on the spring bolt. That's one big mouse trap. But I think Soumalinen is talking about the adjustor shaft. On my D7 it is between the idler wishbone and the spring assembly. Am I correct? Isn't it about the same on the old D8? Or am I clear out in left field?

There is a threaded forging that bolts onto the spring assembly and the threads in it take a great hammering over the years. I had a pile of them in spare parts; had a tough time sorting out one that actually had good threads for a replacment. If it has been greased over the years there may be usable threads. If not, it will probably strip when you put a good push on the idler.

That forging is a big hunk to heat. It would heat faster if it were unbolted from the spring plate.

Thanks fellows for all your input. Been missing Old Magnets advice but pretty much all has been said by you all.
Jack, it is different on the D8 from the one you described. Yours seems like the D4 style in front by the idler which is much easier to heat but then the treads are so exposed that in time they are ruined. This nut and threads are much more protected by a heavy guard next to the sprocket but hard to heat.
I kept trying to think of a good way to convert it to using a porta power and spacers but every idea got too involved and then would not be original on this good old D8 which I sure do like. My American drag line has such a good method of adjusting the tracks like that.

Heat...Beat....and Soak is the only method I know. May take several cycles and some time. Actually, except for the size....and the grip of that barrel nut it is actually one of the ones that is better to work on. At least you can get a box end wrench on the end (6-pt & big cheater)
